I Have the Strangest Want for These

Like, I don’t think I’d ever actually want to own one - for one thing, I kinda hope to never be in a position where a people carrier is the sensible vehicle choice - but they just look so sharp, in that modern Citroen sort of way.

This one was parked just outside my house, in a fairly precarious position, as necessitated by the massive parking fuckery that’s been going on where I live recently.

This and the C4 Cactus are Citroen showing the world that practical cars can have real style.

Isn’t the transmission an issue with these?

Not to my knowledge.

Already? I thought they’ve replaced the ETG-6 with a conventional six-speed automatic by now.

That’s an odd want.

Mind you I hired (by way of unexpected update) the previous one. It was fine.

I haven’t heard anything massively negative or positive about the current Picasso’s transmission—the manual’s not particularly feelsome, but it’s a Citroen MPV, so that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. I doubt the auto’s exactly fantastic, either, but that’s kinda par for the course when it comes to PSA, and most people won’t be getting one with an auto anyway.

The Grand C4 Picasso does look good but I think the C4 Picasso looks better.

The Peugeot 5008 does look good also.

Though I do like the simple lines of the Ford S-Max.

Though (again) they are working on a Vignale version of the Ford Galaxy.

Ok. Just thought I had remembered reading somewhere about them. I think maybe it was just that it wasn't anything special. Maybe not so much that they had issues with them.

A friend of mine has an old Xsara Picasso - it’s his parents’ car, and he used to drive it before getting his own - and while I wouldn’t go so far as to call it ‘good’, I do remember rather enjoying the way it leans like crazy whenever you go around a corner at speed.

Oh, and if you sit in the full-size middle-rear seat, with the tan/beige interior, you feel like Captain Picard on the bridge of the Enterprise, so that’s a laugh.

Maybe it was just that it was something the people who reviewed it were critical of.

Probably the automated manual, which not everyone likes. They use a conventional automatic now, as an option - they’re generally manual.

Ok, that’s what it was! I told the other two who commented that maybe it wasn’t actually anything wrong with them. I remember that transmission name though.

The regular C4 Picasso does look better, but only because it’s moderately less van-like. They’re both pleasantly spaceship-ish.

No other MPVs really do it for me, to be honest—it’s not a category I traditionally get much joy out of. It’s the Citroen’s unique design that makes it work.

It's the ETG-6. Mulitpla mentioned it. Did they replace that one with something else?

The EAT6 is fine. My father, whose an advocate for manuals, was converted by his (he had no choice in the matter). He has the 3008 with it matted to the 1.6 HDI in 110hp flavor, and after 30,000+ km in it (since last november), he’s absolutely fine with that gearbox, even though he dreaded it a lot before getting the car.

Enjoy the 5008, next year it’s getting replaced by a 7-seater SUV.

Yes, conventional automatic, the EAT6 if I recall correctly. Anyways it’s an Aisin 6 speeder.

Last time round the bigger engined cars had the conventional automatic (I know because I hired one once) and the smaller ones the AMT. There was a time when they tried to make the AMT standard but buyers weren’t having that and so a manual appeared.

MPVs aren’t really my thing either.

I’ve found the Superb more enjoyable to a friend’s Zafira when trying to put kids into child seats because of the rear legroom I don’t have to lean across, I can climb in and properly place them and belt them in.

I don’t have kids of my own and doubt I will so I can go and enjoy cars.

I’d never get one. I’ve no need for an MPV. I’d go for an estate again long before I’d need an MPV. I could possibly go for a Skoda Kodiak once I see one in person when they get released.
